Don't Follow Directions

Well, we got some different, better, simpler directions yesterday and made it about 24 miles to Tarboro, NC yesterday afternoon only to discover that we had missed a turn about 5 miles back.  We realized we were not going to be able to make it to our goal destination, the very cool Green Acres campground, so we got a room here in Tarboro.  It's across from the first Walmart we've seen since we left so we decided to trade in our sleeping pads for a mattress made for two.  The single ones we had were just TERRIBLE and they were slippery and our sleeping bags would just slide right off of them.  The new mattress looks way more comfortable and it was less expensive too.  So next time we camp, which hopefully will be tonight, we should sleep great.

We are finding that until we get to the trails Adventure Cycling has established, The Atlantic Coast Trail and the TransAmerica Trail, that finding places to camp is next to impossible.  Once we can start using our awesome maps, though, we will be camping more.  We should hit the trail today once we reach Plymouth.  This is a good thing!  Hotels aren't what we had in mind at all!

  1. Every missed turn is just another unexpected opportunity. I agree with you about hotels. Part of the fun of a cycling trip is being able to park your trike and then crawling into your own tent for a much needed rest. Cycling and camping go together like peanut butter and jelly. I love waking up when the sun is just starting to rise and sitting around a campfire while everyone else is still asleep. Just sitting there enjoying the peace and quiet while watching the sky change colors is a great way to start the day! I hope you have a great day out there! I'm sitting here in the comfort of my own home wishing I could be waking up in my tent on the ground, instead. I feel like a pioneer without a wagon!

  2. It’s great that humans can learn and adapt to new situations and make life better. If only politicians could do the same.

  3. Glad you can rest better now! That is important physically and mentally. Being flexible is important as travelers. You are doing well! Dad
